Hey,
My old server was an old Xbox, with Gentoo on it. They sort of stopped supporting it. This resulted in me completely breaking the install when I tried updating it a couple of weeks ago. So I left it for a while like that…
When I was searching ebay 2 weeks ago for a new case for my laptop, because there was a crack in it! I spotted the complete under half of my laptop for 20 pounds. So I thought why not use that as a server? I ordered it received it in 4 days. The part I received was casing plus workin mainboard, keayboard and touchpad. The only thing missing to make it a complete was a screen, ram and a hard drive. But because it’s a laptop the mainboard has everything else you need on it: usb, ethernet, vga port. You just need to install linux on it and manage from any ssh client.
I decide to install Gentoo again, because I like it and I am used to managing it. I bought some 1GB ram for 32 euro’s and a 320GB My Passport usb hard drive from Western Digital for 95 euro. This is quite a bit cheaper then an ATA disk + the special Dell caddy. This resulted in a nice VERY quiet set up with Pentium Centrino 1.4 GHz, 1GB DDR ram and 320 GB sata hard drive. All this for someting like 170 euro’s! Did I mention it has a battery? So it has an APC too
I had a spare one from replacing my own laptops battery. It should be able to survive a 1h30 power outage
